What's next.
Seven months ago, I left San Francisco. I moved to New York for a lot of reasons, but mostly, because it was time to try something new. To be uncomfortable in my surroundings, to challenge myself with a newer (to me), harsher, harder city. To fulfill my desire to live in Manhattan before I got all domestic and did things like “settle down”, get myself hitched and have lots of babies....

Love is still a mixtape, it's just an infrequent...
It all started with my friend Ryan McManus.
Ok, that’s not entirely true. It started many, many years before I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan; it started back when I was younger, with a silver Casio boombox, Lite Rock 106.5 (don’t judge me, I was in CLEVELAND) and a Memorex tape. I realized that I could save my precious allowance if I recorded songs off of the radio instead of...
The importance of your kickboxing class
I started working for Google back in the early (read: 2003) days. I started at the now-behemoth (but then, relatively small) company in their Atlanta office; I was the ninth employee there. We were lean, nimble, passionate about our work, and long days were the norm. We were helping build the AdWords business, and took that responsibility seriously (though yes, there was the occasional Razor...

rickwebb's tumblrmajig: I'll talk how I want →
rickwebb:
In the past few weeks, I have heard passionate complaints against people who say “um.” People who say “like.” People who say “right?” at the end of their sentences. I just read a very fine book which spent a whole chapter decrying the use of the word “so” to start a sentence or a presentation (I…

The Common Sense Guide to SXSW: It's Really Not...
Seems like everyone is posting a “Guide to SXSW”. Many of these contain paragraph after paragraph of tangible advice, everything from “Be nice” (I agree) to “Buy up all the chalk, bubbles, glitter…you can” (HUH? Um…no.) With respect to everyone’s opinions, y’all are frankly thinking about it way too much. (And don’t get me started...

Shrinky-dink
I’ve been seeing a therapist, something I’ve been wanting/needing to do for a long time, and while it’s still early days, I feel like some interesting things are surfacing. Now, I consider myself pretty self-aware, such that when I identify a behaviour I have that I don’t like, I first try to fix it myself. But sometimes the mere acknowledgement of the behaviour...

Questioning YOUR norm: Why you should
“I prefer…” “I work better when…” “I don’t feel comfortable when…”
We’re so accustomed to telling ourselves, and others, things that we think to be true, that often we don’t allow ourselves the opportunity to prove ourselves wrong. To find out if something we’ve said and done for years remains true. Or, in some cases,...
Unresolved: Why I'm Not Making Any 2012...
As many others have, I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few days thinking about what I’d like to see in this new year. Thought about where I’m at right now, where I was last year, and - as my friend Ron wisely advised - looked back two years ago to see how far I’ve actually come. (Those of you who’ve known me for a while can attest that I am, thankfully, at a...

[a]way with words: aubs' dec. 2011 mix
I did it. It was a lofty goal, and many months I thought there was no way I was going to find the time to post another mix. “Who’s going to miss this?” I’d think. “Maybe I’ll just wait for next month.” But instead, I somehow made it a priority to get all twelve of these suckers out, albeit usually a few weeks late. Because it’s important to me. This...

I was reading the interwebs this weekend and was diving into some posts on Fred Wilson’s AVC blog. He had posted an interesting presentation from George Colony – CEO of Forrester Research – from the Le Web conference in Paris, which I thought was an interesting, if not thought provoking,…
Yep. What he said. (He’s smart and shit.)
reeling through an endless fall: aubs' november...
I had queued up this whole extensive post about life and love and happiness and contentment and what that all means. It was very existential and introspective and, well, too much for this. So instead I’ve queued up some emo bullshit on Spotify and am amusing myself through those instead of tackling this subject for today.
SO. Here’s the November Mix. No commentary given this...

Finally got around to reading this article, thanks to Foster’s folllow up today. It’s good.
As a lifelong depression sufferer who ran a business, I can say the pressures were intense, and there were times I thought I would die. The day I had an employee whose child was born with its organs outside their rib cage was a rough one. Laying off people was always something that would send...

standing still to move ahead: aubs' october 2011...
New York is a city of movement. We walk faster here. We put our little white earbuds in our ears, moving to the beat of our own soundtrack, often immune to the song of the city. The noise that the subway makes when it whirrs past you, the sound of the expletives when you’ve missed the train by 30 seconds. It’s a fast-paced city, this one, and I feel like I haven’t stopped moving...

Generation X is sick of your bullshit →

Generation X Doesn’t Want to Hear It
Earlier generations have weathered recessions, of course; this stall we’re in has the look of something nastier. Social Security and...
New York Newbie
So I’ve officially been an NYC resident for nineteen days. And most of them have been glorious; I truly picked the best time of the year to come here, especially to fill the seasonless gap that was six years in San Francisco. New York has an autumn, people, and no, I’m not talking about that four-day stretch of Indian Summer that San Francisco receives in late-September or...
Spiralling: Aubs Sept. 2011 Mix
On my last day in SF, I made sure to do something extremely important: Upload this mix to my server. Because, you see, I realized I wouldn’t have a computer for a few weeks and seriously wanted to get ahead of my game. FOR ONCE. Alas, here we are, approaching mid-October, and you know what they say about best-laid plans. (They say I should stop making them.)
Regardless, this mix was...

Friday, Farewell
It was six years ago. I had just switched jobs within Google, and since I had just bought a house in Atlanta, I was adamant that I wouldn’t move to San Francisco for the role, even though they were asking me to. We worked out a deal…I would come for six weeks to help get Google Analytics underway, and then six-month-old Lila Belle and I would head back to Atlanta to do the job from...
